Paul, that looks pretty good. Are you going to try to equal-length the tubes on 2/3 by adding some extra height to the runners? It doesn't look like it from the polys on the image above, but I figure I'd ask anyway.

That radius on the #4 runner is sharp too -- looks about 110deg. If you smoothed it out I think you would get better flow on that runner (i.e. less risk of detachment).

Also, what are you doing in terms of the collector design? Honestly, I think your best bet would be to use the tubing to direct the exhaust through the collector, rather than try directing the exhaust within it.

I hope you don't take my comments/criticism offensively. It surely isn't meant in that light.

If you could export that to a .sldprt file so I could see it in 3d that would be nifty. :)

AutoCAD sucks as far as exporting files...

See if this gives you a better idea about what's going on. The collector's a little long, but I'll adjust it later:

I'll try to make everything as equal length as possible, but I don't think the casting process will allow me that much flexibility. I have to discuss it more with the foundry.

Shit, i forgot you were planning on casting it.

Potentially, you could have the foundry do a disposable sand mold (like ferrari does for its cylinder heads, etc.) as that can allow for more complex shapes and contours -- however I don't know if that's within their capability, or your price range.

Out of curiosity, why are you opting for cast over tubular again? (I'm pretty sure you told me, but I'm having a busy week) Just due to the cracking potential?

A lot of that could be solved by using mandrel bends and slip joints over orange/pie slicing and lots of welding.

I'm thinking something along the lines of this but with the raised sections on runners 2&3 (instead of 1&4) to get more equal lengths 1-4.

I'll try to get you copy of SW this week. Hopefully you'll be able to move your file into it (to save you some work) and do some flow simulations on it to see where some trouble spots may be. :)

Thanks, I really appreciate it! I've been dying for a copy of SolidWorks for years now.

I don't know much about what casting process this company uses, but I believe it's either investment mold or sand casting. I'll find out more as I get further into development.

By the way, I'm taking your advice and getting my current manifold welded in the mean time. Thanks for suggesting that and helping me see a more reasonable solution. No sense in spending money on a manifold and piping that'll just get replaced later on down the road...

I'm casting these manifolds for reliability, consistency, and low cost. I plan on selling them since no one really makes a good turbo manifold for the 420A.

Hahn makes a decent welded manifold (not prone to cracking), but it's expensive, it doesn't have an external wastegate port, and it's a log style manifold. Star makes a good cast manifold, but it's also a log style, and it's overpriced too. There's the usual eBay crap, which we'll ignore. Then there's the Treadstone manifold, which is a Star knock-off, but it's casted very well.

Anyway, as you can see, the log style is pretty much an omnipresent design in 420A world. Well, that's just not cutting it for me, and I'm sure others as well.

I also have a deal with Punishment to make welded manifold based off the same template as the cast manifold, so we'll see how that goes.

My part of the deal ends with design, so I'll have to trust my partners with the actual manufacturing. If it's not up to my standards, then they won't be sold or endorsed by me in any way. I think the cast ones will come out pretty good. I can't say about the welded ones, but I think Tim at Punishment does decent work from what I've seen.

I'll bring up the design of that FP manifold next time I meet with Jason about casting these new manifolds.

You raise a very valid point... I've dealt with some pretty awful people before. I mostly work on a contractual basis now. My partners and clients need to sign a bunch of legal mumbo jumbo before I release anything to them.

By the way... the guy that does my welding confirmed my suspicions. In his professional opinion, even if my current manifold were welded, it would crack again -- he doesn't even think it would last a week before the crack redevelops.

So... :dunno:

I trust the guy. so I guess I'm back to upgrading to the 35R sometime soon...
