Post subject:  Hey Guys!! My Official Introduction

Hi, my name is Ricky and I just signed up recently. My screen name here is the same as on tuners (been on tuners since October).
I recently picked up a good deal on a 95 project GST and I'm now an official DSM'r. I had a 95 GS before but I sold it a few months ago.
I've driven past the Checkers on University and Commercial and saw you guys out there but
never really had the time to stop and say hi.

I got the chance to meet Paul (VelocitàPaola) back in January when he helped me with a HG/Timing belt job on my old GS,
he's a really cool/helpful dude. I really dont know any other local dsmers apart from my friend Jermaine in Miramar who
drives a white 95 GST and my cousin used to live in FL but moved to New York (RWKustoms on tuners).

Anyway, I picked up my GST for $625 and it has some problems. I'll be appreciative if some of you local guys could help me get it running.
When I'm able to, I'll post a thread with the problems I'm having.

*shrug* At least he doesn't work for a certain whore-shop.

Welcome Ricky. Post up your issues. There is a vast amount of knowledge available to you here.

Welcome as well. I am new here too, but not new to DSMs.

Post your issues and see what can we do about it.

Good luck with the car.

I did some work on the car yesterday and I noticed a few problems.

Missing ISC?

Missing emissions stuff:

And the timing belt is off by a tooth or two.

I did get a chance to install the injectors and the fuel rail though.

If someone has an extra ISC laying around, I'll be happy to take it off their hands. I'll be at the meet with Paul later.

That's only for you Shane, because you're special :P
Are you gonna by once in while?

Welcome Ricky and I look forward to meeting a few new DSMers.
And Yes, like Sillycon said there's a lot knowledge here.
And people willing to lend a helping hand.

BTW, if your timing belt is off, then it has to come out and be re-done :(

I thought that if it's only off by a tooth or two it will still run but just run horribly.

I am planning on doing a complete timing job though so it will be attended to but just not now.

If it's your timing is off by even a tooth, you could lose the head.
Sometimes you can get lucky, but you shouldn't run the car with
the timing off...

What whore shop?

Yea, Omar I dunno. I have alot going on right now with my car and work and stuff. We'll see.

One tooth off won't kill you. The car will just run like shit. The chance of loosing the head is retardedly low. The real question is why the belt is a tooth off.

If it jumps to two teeth or more you could be in trouble though. As you said, that looks about 1 tooth off. It's not a big deal to fix, just redo the timing. Shouldn't take more than two hours.

ISC: www.dsmisc.com

The emissions stuff is moot. If you showed up at the meet with it in, almost everyone would tell you to eliminate it anyway.

That's what I thought, thanks man. I just wanna get it running though to make sure that...it runs. But I'll be doing a full timing/water pump job in the near future. I'm all about full maintenance right now. And by the way I'll be getting a replacement ISC from a local dsmer who's parting out his car.

Is this the appropriate thread to post progress pics and questions?

First off, welcome to the new guy.

Second, my memory is a bit rusty (insert old guy joke here, I'm sure you will), but I thought I remembered that some guys claimed to have purposely thrown off the exhaust (I think) cam timing to gain a few HP. I couldn't tell from the pic if that's the case here or not, however.

[edit]Hey, I actually remembered correctly! Don't know if this is actually true, but...

There is a ton of bad information in that thread, and there is no actual data to back up any of the claims.

Unless you have adjustable gears and have the car on a dyno, messing with cam timing is not something you should be doing.

I wasn't advocating that he do that, just offering a possible explanation of why it was that way already.

Funny enough, when I was reading your post and the info in that link, I found myself wondering if owning a mustang had somehow made you less intelligent than I remembered -- "Doug knows better than to post info from tuners. Did the Mustang people eat his brain or something?"

:banghead:

How come you never show up to the Mustang challenge events?

1) Can't afford the $30 each time.
2) Bracket racing doesn't really appeal to me.

BTW, I don't hate dsmtuners as much as most of you-- I actually learned quite a bit from there. You just have to know who to listen to and who to ignore.

Hey thanks guys for the warm welcome. I'm not too concerned if the timing was retarded intentionally for more power because I'll be doing a timing job on it eventually; I just need to make sure that it runs. I'm expecting my ISC and some more stuff this week so this weekend I'll be able to do a little more work. (Unless Paul wants to come help me with more stuff  ).

I'll post more pics and stuff of the progress especially if I have any problems. Hopefully it starts up this weekend.

Try bracket racing sometime. I thought it was unappealing as well, but I've since found otherwise -- and I haven't even had the opportunity to race my car at the event yet.

There is a hell of a lot going on with bracket racing, so one certainly can't claim it as boring.

I'm up in Jacksonville, possibly until Monday, but I'd be down to help out after work this week or next weekend. Then I could finally get rid of these projectors...

Remember, 9005 Silverstars and clear side markers!

Well guys I got the car to run. Replaced the IAC and changed all the plugs and got new wires. The car runs but runs rough as you can tell by the vid. And that annoying squealing sound as you guys already know are the old belts. Those will be changed and tensioned properly. I did move it about 15 feet forward and back and it seems it has no power. I'm thinking big boost leaks! Just click the vid.

All suggestions are welcome from watching the vid. I need to know if you guys hear anything else that is wrong.

PS. I know the timing is off by 2 teeth so that might explain the horrible idle and the fact that it hasn't ran in 7 months. The CEL is on also.

Author:  doug [ Sun Jun 24, 2007 1:40 pm ]
Post subject:

Get that timing thing fixed, do a boost leak test, and worry about the CEL later. Is your catalytic converter still in?

Post subject:

Doug hit the nail on the head. Timing and BLT.

The timing thing may well help the car to have no balls also.
